Man darf nicht aufhören, von den Gräueln des Zweiten Weltkrieges (1936-1945) zu berichten! Das ist das Credo des Buch-Autors Kurt Schreiner, der genau auf dem 1. Mai 1936 geboren wurde. Zu einem Zeitpunkt, als auf der vorbeiführenden Straße die Nationalsozialisten unter Fanfarenklängen und Marschgesängen zur Maikundgebung ins nahe Sportstadion zogen. Als er mit drei Jahren den Kriegsbeginn noch unbedarft begrüßte mit Strammstehen, improvisiertem, geschultertem Gewehr und Pickelhelm (Titelbild des Buchs.) konnte er noch nicht ahnen, was Krieg bedeutete. Als einer aus der Generation von noch lebenden Zeitzeugen erlebte er die Herrschaft der faschistischen Nationalsozialisten, die verheerenden Geschehnisse des Totalen Krieges und die bedrückende Nachkriegszeit. Und er erinnert an die Schulspeisungen, die Hamsterfahrten und den Schwarzmarkt nach dem Zusammenbruch des Dritten Reichs. Die Ferien verbrachte er alljährlich als Erntehelfer zusammen mit seinen Eltern auf dem Bauernhof seiner Großeltern auf dem Lande. Als sogenannter Volksschüler war er den ideologischen Indoktrinierungsversuchen des Nazi-Regimes ausgesetzt. Er berichtet von den so ganz anderen Spielen seiner Kindheit als heute. Sie fanden statt auf fast autofreien Straßen, einer waldbestandenen Kippe und an den Ufern eines geheimnisvollen Froschtümpels. Er lässt den Leser teilnehmen am Bau seiner Seifenkiste und einer Bühne für ein Zimmer-Puppentheater mit Hänneschen und Co. Nach Kriegsende passierte er dann die ersten Male in seinem Leben als Jugendlicher die Grenzschranken des ehemaligen Deutschen Reiches hinüber zu den Nachbarländern, den Ex-Feinden. Mit seinem Blutsfreund bricht er mit 16 Jahren mit 8o DM in der Tasche zu einem 6-wöchigen Fahrrad-Trip über die Alpen Richtung Rom auf. Als Werkkunstschüler unternimmt der inzwischen 22jährige allein eine drei Monate dauernde Abenteuerreise per Auto-Stopp in die Balkanländer. Statt Ressentiments gegen den Nazi-Deutschen erfährt er in den ausgeplünderten Lände
