La Navidad es la fiesta más importante del año. Después de los días correspondientes que exaltan el orgullo nacional de cada país, como el Día de la Independencia en Estados Unidos, el Día de la Victoria en rusia o el Día de la Bastilla en Francia, es el 25 de diciembre el que articula la vida, el trabajo y la economía en buena parte del mundo, incluidos muchos países no cristianos. Desde tiempos antiguos, el comienzo del invierno ha sido la ocasión para que la mayoría de la gente coma, beba, baile y se reúna para festejar y tomar un descanso.
Uno de los aspectos más famosos de la Navidad es Santa Claus, una figura mitológica con muchos apodos, que han sido adoptados alrededor del mundo dependiendo de los diversos idiomas: Papá Noel para los pueblos de habla hispana, derivado del "Padre Navidad" original, Papai Noel en Portugal y Brasil, Père Noël en Francia, y Kris Kringle como una adaptación mal pronunciada del personaje originario alemán, Christkindl, entre otros. Los entusiastas de la cultura popular saben rastrear las raíces de Santa Claus hasta San Nicolás de Mira, y es ampliamente aceptado que la Coca-Cola fabricó la imagen contemporánea de Santa que el mundo acepta y ama hoy en día. Tras la muerte de Nicolás de Mira, el 6 de diciembre se convirtió en el día de su fiesta, y a lo largo de los siglos, los niños esperaban su llegada con regalos. Sin embargo, otros niños, particularmente los del tipo travieso, temblaban bajo sus mantas en esa noche, porque no podían esperarse el repicar de campanillas o risotadas alegres. En cambio, temían los desconcertantes sonidos de una respiración pesada, gruñidos guturales y cadenas arrastrándose, todos los cuales provenían del aterrador Krampus.
A pesar de los mejores esfuerzos de la Iglesia Católica y otros grupos conservadores, el Krampus está experimentando un renacimiento, penetrando no solo en la literatura moderna, sino incluso convirtiéndose en parte integrante de la cultura popular.
