Für Aristoteles ist Ethik die Suche nach dem Glück und die Wissenschaft, die dieses Glück begleitet. Es geht sowohl um Freundschaft als auch um Tugenden. Aber die Stagirite versucht nicht, die Moral zu revolutionieren, ganz im Gegenteil. Darüber hinaus wird das Wort êthika im Griechischen aus êthos gebildet, was Moral, Lebensgewohnheiten bedeutet. Glück ist also der Eindruck der Tat des Besten, der schwerwiegendsten Tat, also weit entfernt vom kindischen Spaß. "Der Akt des Besten ist auch von sich aus besser, und er bringt mehr Glück. Der Mensch kann große Ehre daraus ziehen, der Versuchung des Vergnügens zu widerstehen, um seine Pflicht zu erfüllen, und es ist dieser Stolz, dieses gute Gewissen, das ihm sein Glück sichert (innere Zufriedenheit, Verringerung der Schuldgefühle usw.), seine Vernunft wäre ziemlich machtlos, den entwertenden Versuchungen zu widerstehen. Um diesen Akt der Besten zu erreichen, muss man durch Tugend gehen. Tugend ist der Wunsch nach schönen Dingen mit der Macht, sie zu erlangen. Das Glück ist der einzige Weg, der zum Glück führt, und dieser Weg besteht für Aristoteles in der Ausübung der Tugend.
