Das Forschungsziel besteht darin, vorhandene Instrumente zur Mitarbeitermotivation zu analysieren und ein Konzept zu finden, das die Zufriedenheit der Mitarbeiter trotz belastender Arbeitsbedingungen in der Hotellerie langfristig verbessert, ihre Motivation gewährleistet und sie lange an das Unternehmen bindet. In diesem Zusammenhang sollen Gründe für die hohe Fluktuation im Hotelgewerbe identifiziert werden. Dabei werden Wirkung und Grenzen ausgewählter Motivationssysteme aufgezeigt und alle Arten leistungs- beziehungsweise erfolgsorientierter Bezahlung, mit der vermeintlich die Motivation der Mitarbeiter einhergeht, kritisch hinterfragt. Die daran anschließende empirische Studie, in der Angestellte und ehemalige Angestellte des Gastgewerbes zu ihrer Arbeitsmotivation befragt wurden, soll Ansätze liefern, welche Faktoren am Arbeitsplatz sie besonders positiv beziehungsweise negativ beeinflussen. "Ein Baum ohne Wurzeln ist wie ein Chef ohne seine Mitarbeiter - beim kleinsten Lüftchen fällt er um!" Ein Unternehmen kann immer nur so gut sein wie seine Mitarbeiter. Diese Aussage erweist sich in Zeiten des Fachkräftemangels als immer zutreffender. Mit Blick auf die demografische Entwicklung werden der deutschen Wirtschaft bis zum Jahr 2030 rund fünf Millionen Fachkräfte fehlen. Führungskräfte sehen sich somit nicht nur der Herausforderung der Umsatz- und Gewinngenerierung gegenüber, sondern mit steigender Priorität der Verantwortung, sich im Kampf um qualifizierte Mitarbeiter zu beweisen.
