Zwar wurde im Jahr 2004 "lediglich" ein vergleichsweise moderater Umsatzrückgang von 3,6% verzeichnet, jedoch ist der Gesamtumsatz von 1998 mit 2,7 Mrd. auf ein Niveau von 1,7 Mrd. im Jahr 2004 gefallen (vgl. IFPI 2005, S. 11). Hinzu kommt ein großes Rentabilitätsproblem (vgl. Kusek/Leonhard 2005, S. 108f.): Im Jahr 2001 gab es in den USA 6455 CD-Veröffentlichungen, davon haben lediglich 112 einen Gewinn generiert, d.h. den Break-Even-Point erreicht - dies entspricht 1,7% (vgl. Lau 2002, S. 42). Angesichts solcher Zahlen sollte man denken, die Musikindustrie würde alles in Bewegung setzen, dies zu ändern.Für den Umsatzrückgang macht die Musikindustrie den stetigen Anstieg von illegalen Musikkopien (CD-Brennen) und die illegale Verbreitung von Musik über das Internet (bspw. über "File-Sharing") verantwortlich (vgl. IFPI 2004, S. 7f.). Weitere Gründe - z.B. eventuelle eigene Versäumnisse - räumt sie nicht ein. Ob diese genannten Gründe für die eklatanten Umsatzrückgänge überhaupt bzw. einzig und allein angeführt werden können, wird in der Literatur zum Teil bezweifelt (Friedrichsen et al. 2004, S.67) und scheint bei den großen Erfolgen bspw. eines Eminem, der besonders häufig in den Tauschbörsen zu finden ist und gleichwohl erfolgreiche Plattenverkäufe verzeichnet, unwahrscheinlich (vgl. Friedrichsen et al. 2004, S. 150). Bis heute liegt kein eindeutiges neues Geschäftskonzept der Musikindustrie vor, welches die Umsatzsituation deutlich verbessern könnte.
