Wir haben im Untertitel bewusst den Terminus der "Unterrichtseinheiten" formuliert [...] In der Verwirklichung sehen wir den Wechsel zwischen lehrenden und lernenden Elementen als am Praktikabelsten an. Daher ist die Formulierung der "pragmatischen Unterrichtseinheiten" bewusst gewählt. Der Begriff des Konstruktivismus wurde in den 1970er bis 90er Jahren geprägt. [...] Der Auslöser für die Entwicklung konstruktivistischer Lehr- und Lernformen war die Feststellung über die Existenz "[...] 'trägen' Wissens" (Reinmann-Rothmeier 1996, S. 41). Bildungswissenschaftler gelangten zu der Erkenntnis, dass die Wissensträgheit auf die Lehrmethode der Frontalbeschallung, der so genannten "Trichterphilosophie" zurückzuführen ist. "[...] the contrast between education and indoctrination has not, even recently, been taken for granted in parts of the world that qualify as 'democratic' (Tiles 1992, S. 15). Letztere ist gekennzeichnet durch wenig Aktivität der Teilnehmer, exemplarisch durch keinerlei Eigeninitiative, absente Selbstkontrolle und fehlende Kontextbezüge. "Damit bleibt die mögliche Relevanz des Wissens ebenso im dunkeln [sic] wie der potentielle Nutzen des Gelernten in realen Situationen" (Reinmann-Rothmeier 1996, S. 41).
