Die Gesundheitskompetenz kann als eine Schlüsselqualifikation für gesundes Leben bezeichnet werden. Allerdings sind über die Hälfte aller Deutschen gesundheitsinkompetent. Diese Aussage bestätigt das Ergebnis einer Studie der Universität Bielefeld aus dem Jahr 2016. Diese Studie hat aufgezeigt, dass bei 54,3 Prozent der deutschen Bevölkerung eine eingeschränkte Gesundheitskompetenz vorliegt. Deutschland liegt dabei im internationalen Vergleich nur im Mittelfeld und im europaweiten Ländervergleich unter dem Durchschnitt. In Gesamteuropa liegt die Prävalenz mangelnder Gesundheitskompetenzen bei knapp 50 Prozent. Das deutsche Gesundheitssystem wird immer komplexer und die Anforderungen an die Fähigkeiten, sich in diesem System zurechtzufinden, werden zunehmend schwieriger. Die gesetzlichen Krankenkassen sind wichtige Akteure im Gesundheitswesen und haben u.a. die Aufgabe, die Versicherten beim Finden, Verstehen, Beurteilen und Anwenden von gesundheits- und krankheitsrelevanten Informationen zu unterstützen. Krankenkassen sind Träger für den Aufbau einer individuellen und gesellschaftlichen Gesundheitskompetenz. Sie stehen in der gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung, die Bevölkerung für Gesundheit zu sensibilisieren und die notwendigen Möglichkeiten und Maßnahmen in den unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsschichten mit Hilfe einer auf Gesundheitsförderung ausgerichteten Gesundheits- und Bildungspolitik umzusetzen.
