In dem vorliegenden Buch, das im Jahr 2006 von der Universität Bielefeld als Dissertation angenommen wurde, wird ein Kommunikationstraining für Altenpflegekräfte entwickelt, das ihnen helfen möchte, mit schwierigen, evtl. auch emotional belastenden Situationen leichter umzugehen. Es wendet sich an Pflegekräfte im Altenheim sowie in der Tagespflege, da diese beiden Formen in der Altenpflege besonders häufig vertreten sind. Das Buch gliedert sich in zwei Teile. Im ersten Teil werden zunächst die theoretischen Grundlagen vorgestellt, die bei der Kommunikation von und mit alten Menschen ganz allgemein eine Rolle spielen. So wird im ersten Kapitel zunächst untersucht, wie sich die Kommunikationsfähigkeit im höheren Lebensalter entwickelt, durch welche Faktoren sie ggf. beeinträchtigt werden kann und welcher Strategien sich alte und jüngere Menschen im Gespräch bedienen. Das zweite Kapitel untersucht die Lage in Altenheim und Altentagespflege und betrachtet sowohl die Situation der alten Menschen selbst als auch der Pflegekräfte. Das dritte Kapitel befasst sich mit dem Aspekt des Kommunikationstrainings. Hier gibt es eine Fülle höchst unterschiedlicher Konzepte, teils zur Anwendung im Kurs gedacht, teils zum Selbststudium, die sich jedoch letztlich allesamt auf drei Grundformen zurückführen lassen. Diese drei Grundformen und ihre jeweiligen Vor- und Nachteile werden ausführlich erörtert, um eine Basis für ein eigenes Konzept zu finden. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wird zunächst eine empirische Fallstudie vorgestellt. Die Autorin führte Interviews mit insgesamt 16 Pflegekräften in Altenheim und Tagespflege, um zu ermitteln, welche Situationen von ihnen als besonders schwierig und belastend empfunden wurden. Auf dieser Grundlage entwickelte sie dann ein Konzept für ein Kommunikationstraining, bei dem sie bestimmte kommunikative Strategien aus bereits vorhandenen Konzepten daraufhin untersuchte, inwieweit sie sich jeweils in den ermittelten Problemsituationen einsetzen lasse
