Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Afrika, FernUniversität Hagen (Kulturwissenschaften), Veranstaltung: Modul G4, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Im Jahr 1905 kam es in der damaligen Kolonie Deutsch-Ostafrika, dem heutigen Tansania, zu einem der größten Eingeborenenaufstände der deutschen Kolonialgeschichte. In seinen Konsequenzen und vor allem in der Brutalität der deutschen Gegenmaßnahmen war dieser sogenannte Maji-Maji-Krieg weit bemerkenswerter als zum Beispiel der viel diskutierte Hottentotten- und Hereroaufstand in Deutsch-Südwestafrika. Dennoch ist dieser Maji-Maji-Krieg im historischen Bewusstsein der Deutschen so gut wie nicht existent. Die Gründung Deutsch-Ostafrikas, das erst 1891 Kronkolonie wurde und damit der Hoheit des Deutschen Reiches unterstand, war ursprünglich eine private Unternehmung: Statt eine akademische Laufbahn einzuschlagen, entschloss sich der promovierte Historiker Carl Peters seinen Traum eines deutschen Kolonialreiches in Afrika in die Tat umzusetzen. Im Zeitraum von 1891 bis 1897 wurde Peters als Reichskommissar für das Kilimandscharo-Gebiet eingesetzt. Hier kümmerte er sich um die Festlegung der Grenze gegenüber dem britischen Ostafrika. Durch sein brutales Vorgehen gegen die afrikanische Bevölkerung kam es dann zu einem Aufstand, der Peters letzten Endes sein Amt kostete. Auch wenn Peters nicht mehr amtierender Reichskommissar in Deutsch-Ostafrika gewesen ist, so hat seine Kolonialpolitik dem Anschein nach Spuren hinterlassen. In dieser Hausarbeit soll unter anderem die Frage beantwortet werden, inwieweit die ursprünglich durch Dr. Carl Peters initiierte Kolonialpolitik richtungsweisend für die Politik nachfolgender Kolonialherren gewesen ist. Insbesondere soll die Frage beantwortet werden, inwiefern der Maji-Maji-Krieg auf diese Kolonialpolitik Dr. Carl Peters' zurückzuführen ist. Es soll eine "saubere" Trennlinie zwischen der Amtszeit von Peters und dem Beginn des Krieges gezogen werden, da er bereits acht
