"Woher kommt [...] dieses Unbehagen, dem jeder empfindsame Mensch in den europäischen Kolonien ausgesetzt ist? Das rührt daher, da[ss] die Idee der Kolonie selbst eine unmoralische ist, diese Idee eines Landes [...], in welchem [...] die Aufklärung sich nur bis zu einem bestimmten Punkt ausbreiten [darf]." Alexander von Humbold, 1803 In dieser Tagebuchnotiz des berühmten deutschen Naturforschers spiegelt sich die Grundlage der vorliegenden Arbeit, eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit der vorherrschenden Form außereuropäischer Kolonien und die Frage nach einer generellen Legitimität einer solchen kolonialen Machtausübung wider, wie sie im 18. Jahrhundert im Kreise einflussreicher Gelehrter verstärkt zum Ausdruck kam. Eine solche, vielfach formulierte und auf unterschiedlichsten theoretischen Ansätzen basierende Kolonialismuskritik wurde insbesondere im Zuge der Aufklärung wiederholt Thema moralphilosophischer Veröffentlichungen und Gegenstand intellektueller Diskurse. Nahezu alle großen Philosophen jener Zeit widmeten ihre Aufmerksamkeit in unterschiedlichem Ausmaß und aus moralischen, ökonomischen aber auch rationalen Motiven dem Versuch, die außereuropäische koloniale Welt zu beurteilen und letztlich mit dem Aufbau und der Funktionsweise des europäischen Staatensystems in Verbindung zu bringen. Da Großbritannien zu jener Zeit die führende Rolle innerhalb dieses Staatensystems einnahm und sich als Britisches Weltreich (engl.: British Empire) Mitte des Jahrhunderts als größte Kolonialmacht in Amerika etablierte, bieten insbesondere britische Philosophen und Gelehrte die Möglichkeit einer Untersuchung aufgeklärter Kolonialismuskrit
