Die damit verbundene eigene Identität kennzeichnet den Menschen als Unikat. Doch niemand kann eine solche allein aus sich selbst heraus erzeugen - es bedarf eines steten Abgleichs mit anderen, sowohl als Idealbild als auch als Kontraposition. Dementsprechend erfüllt eine Identität ihre Funktion für die Fremdwahrnehmung, indem sie einerseits von anderen unterscheidet und andererseits Verknüpfungen innerhalb sozialer Gruppen herstellt. Ihre Prägung unterliegt dabei einem lebenslangen Prozess, welcher Korrekturen unterworfen ist, die durch äußere Einflüsse bedingt sind. Die erste Prägung erfährt das Individuum durch die Familie und dies ist der Grundstein für die Ich‐Identität. Jedoch muss man die Familie als Sonderfall der Gruppe verstehen, da die Zugehörigkeit nicht freiwillig und selektiv gesteuert wird. Erst im Erwachsenenalter hat der Mensch die Möglichkeit, sein soziales Umfeld nach seinen Vorstellungen zu gestalten. Folglich sind es die Zugehörigkeiten und Nicht‐Zugehörigkeiten zu sozialen Gruppen, die den Prozess der Identitätsarbeit in bestimmtem Maße steuern. Die Grundlage hierfür bildet Kommunikation. Wenn es also um die Entwicklung der idealen bzw. idealisierten Identität geht, liegt die Basis in der kommunikativen Interaktion der Gruppe. Unter diesem Aspekt kann man den Prozess grundsätzlich als einen kollektiven und kollaborativen verstehen. Dies gilt im Besonderen vor dem Hintergrund der sich soziokulturell veränderten Rahmenbedingungen der westlichen Welt.
