Ihnen mangelt es an ausreichender Nahrung, sauberem Trinkwasser, medizinischer Versorgung, Grundbildung oder einem Dach über den Kopf (UNICEF 2004: 1). Bei dieser hohen Zahl der in Armut lebenden Kindern und Jugendlichen stellt sich die Frage, wie Armut erfolgreich bekämpft und die Entwicklung dieser jungen Menschen gefördert werden kann. "Armutsprävention muss die Förderung und Stärkung der Potenziale und Ressourcen des jeweiligen Kindes in den Mittelpunkt stellen", schreiben Trisch und Lohrenscheit zur Kinderarmut (2006: 4). Zur Richtung der menschlichen Entwicklung meint Nyerere: "Menschen können nicht entwickelt werden - sie können sich nur selbst entwickeln" (NYERERE zit. n. BOSHOLD u. a. 2002: 4). Darin kommen wesentliche Prinzipien der Sozialen Arbeit zum Ausdruck. Durch Erziehung und Bildung können diese umgesetzt und die kindlichen Kapazitäten angestoßen, entfalten und erhalten werden. Soziale Arbeit setzt sich für die Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen von Menschen ein und steht für soziale Gerechtigkeit - die internationale Entwicklungszusammenarbeit verfolgt das Ziel, weltweit Armut zu bekämpfen. Daraus ergibt sich eine gemeinsame Schnittstelle zwischen Sozialer Arbeit und Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Das Interesse junger Menschen an entwicklungsbezogenen sozialen Tätigkeiten im Ausland und bei der Armutsbekämpfung mitwirken zu wollen, ist seit Jahren unveränderlich hoch. Viele freiwillige Helfer arbeiten in Entwicklungsprojekten mit und unterstützen Kinder und Jugendliche bei der Verbesserung ihrer gegenwärtigen und künftigen Situation.
