Who is Kawanabe Kyōsai? Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889) was a Japanese artist who lived through the Meiji Restoration of 1868 was in the words of a critic an individualist and an independent, perhaps the last virtuoso in traditional Japanese painting.
Many of Kyōsai designs are comic, satiric, humorous and sketchy. Others are strange, weird and frightening. He was known as The Japanese "Demon of Painting' and renowned to have invented Manga in 1874.

The At the end of Kyosai's life, he had produced hundreds of paintings, prints and illustrated books. The paintings and print subjects of Kyosai are from traditional to bizarre and fantastic. He was incredibly imaginative and created designs that have no relations to any known art works of any other Japanese or Western artists. His drawing style was unique and at the same time he was capable of painting in the finest traditional style of an 18th century painter.
The word yōkai is made up of the kanji for "bewitching; attractive; calamity"; and "spectre; apparition; mystery; suspicious." These type of drawings can also be called ayakashi, mononoke, or mamono.
The history of Manga stories are typically printed in black-and-white, although some full-colour manga exist. In Japan, manga are usually serialized in large manga comics, magazines, often containing many stories, each presented in a single episode to be continued in the next issue.
The word anime is the Japanese term for animation, which means all forms of animated media. Outside Japan, anime & refers specifically to animation from Japan or a Japanese animation style often characterized by colourful graphics, vibrant characters and fantastical themes.
