About the Book

English summary: The Gotha Research Library possesses one of the most important manuscript collections for Reformation history in the Federal Republic of Germany. The extant catalog developed by the Reformation historian Daniel Gehrt describes for the first time, in detail, the 260 manuscript volumes of the library, which represents the core of the Reformation collection in Castle Friedenstein-Gotha. The remarkably varied collection spans all confessions and contains 15,800 individual pieces from throughout the 16th century. The core collection is principally composed of materials from the estate of the Lutheran Ernestine dynasty and their religiously motivated acquisitions. The focus of the materials is on the Reformation in Wittenberg and its influence in German-speaking lands as well as the Netherlands, Sweden, and Hungary, and for this reason the sources indicate the international connections and cultural contacts of numerous historical actors from various parts of Europe and even Russia and Constantinople. In addition to notable documents for Martin Luther, George Spalatin, Philipp Melanchthon, Friedrich Myconius and Paul Eber are documents related to later influential Lutheran theologians such as Stephan Gerlach, Agidius Hunnius and George Mylius. The Reformed church is represented with collections of mixed documents from the Geneva-based theologians, John Calvin and Theodore Beza, as well as the Herborn theologian Johannes Piscator. Letters of the Warmian (in northern Poland) bishops, especially Stanislaus Hosius, contains rich source material for the Council of Trent and the Roman Catholic Church in Poland. In this catalog there are 4,000 researchable names, and among them numerous historical actors who till now have not been well known.
