Seine Reiseerzählungen von Kara Ben Nemsi, dem deutschen Abenteurer, und seinem Gefährten, dem gläubigen Moslem Hadschi Halef Omar, im Orient sowie seine Wild-West-Romane mit Winnetou und Old Shatterhand sind Klassiker geworden. Die Auflage seiner Bücher im deutschen Sprachraum wird mit rund 75 Millionen Exemplaren angegeben. Seine Werke sind in 29 Sprachen für weltweit fast 200 Millionen Leser übersetzt worden. Daneben wurden viele seiner Romane erfolgreich verfilmt. Vor dem Hintergrund der historischen Situation des imperialistischen Machstrebens der westlichen Kulturen lassen sich in Mays Roman 'Durchs wilde Kurdistan' Rückschlüsse auf das damals vorherrschende Orientbild ziehen. Durch die im 19. Jahrhundert vorherrschende Faszination des Orients reiht sich May mit seinem 'Orientzyklus' in diese Mode ein. Dass er neben der reinen Darstellung keine, auch heute noch bestehenden, Stereotype auslässt, kann ihm sicher angekreidet werden. Trotzdem üben die Mays Erzählungen nach wie vor eine gewisse Anziehungskraft auf die weltweite Leserschaft aus. Sei es beim jugendlichen Leser, für den der Abenteuerroman im Vordergrund steht, oder als Objekt wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen. Damit kann die abenteuerliche Reise von Kara Ben Nemsi durch Arabien und den Balkan stellvertretend für die kulturelle Auseinandersetzung von Orient und Okzident gesehen werden. Dieser Aufsatz versucht die landläufig gängige Meinung des Orients zu skizzieren, und zwar so, wie sie vornehmlich durch den Ich-Erzähler Kara Ben Nemsi geschildert wird. Gleichzeitig kann dabei die Meinung seines Schöpfers Karl May, der sich über die Maßen mit dieser Figur identifizierte, nicht außer Acht
