Der an der Universität Sendai in Japan bearbeitete Band enthält das bisher unveröffentlichte Redaktionsmanuskript von Friedrich Engels zum zweiten Buch des "Kapitals". Das von Engels und seinem zeitweiligen Sekretär Oskar Eisengarten niedergeschriebene Manuskript ist zwischen Juni 1884 und Februar 1885 entstanden. Es stellt das Bindeglied zwischen den Manuskripten aus dem Nachlaß von Marx (MEGA II/11 und II/4.3) und der von Engels bearbeiteten Druckversion des Werkes (MEGA II/13) dar, die 1885 veröffentlicht wurde. Es ist das einzige Manuskript dieser Art, das Engels' redaktionelle Arbeit an einem der drei Bände des "Kapitals" nach Marx' Tod 1883 vollständig dokumentiert. Der in einem komplizierten Arbeitsprozeß in mehreren Stufen entstandene Text beruht auf sieben von insgesamt zehn Manuskriptentwürfen von Marx. In der vorliegenden Edition wird rekonstruiert, welche Manuskripte und Entwürfe von Engels ausgewählt und wie er sie bearbeitet und neu gegliedert hat. Unter anderem werden mehr als 5000 von Engels vorgenommene Textveränderungen verzeichnet. Der Leser kann sich nun selbst ein Bild von der Ambivalenz machen, die Engels' Redaktion prägte: Auf der einen Seite steht sein Bestreben, die Manuskripte originalgetreu wiederzugeben, also "Marx in Marx' Worten" sprechen zu lassen, auf der anderen Seite sah er sich aber auch dazu legitimiert, in den Text und die Anordnung der Manuskripte einzugreifen, wenn ihm dies geboten erschien. Mit den in Vorbereitung befindlichen MEGA-Bänden II/4.3, II/11 und II/13 wird die Zweite Abteilung dieser historisch-kritischen Edition voraussichtlich zum Jahresende 2007 vollständig vorliegen.
