Karl Marx nació en Tréveris, Alemania, el 5 de mayo de 1818. Su abuelo paterno, Meier Halevi Marx, era el rabino de Tréveris, y su madre, Henrietta Presburg, también era judía. Sin embargo, su padre, Heinrich Marx, se convirtió al cristianismo, no porque creyera en la religión, sino para seguir ejerciendo su profesión, ya que en aquella época los judíos no eran libres de ejercer todas las profesiones y realizar transacciones comerciales.Es interesante pensar que el principal autor de la causa obrera nació en una familia judía de clase media. El hecho de que su padre tuviera que convertirse al cristianismo, las dificultades que experimentaban los judíos por el mero hecho de serlo, el contexto político anterior a la revolución y las cuestiones filosóficas de su época son aspectos cruciales para entender su obra.En octubre de 1835, Marx ingresó en la Universidad de Bonn para estudiar Derecho, a la edad de 17 años. En 1836 el padre de Marx lo trasladó a la Universidad de Berlín. Ese mismo año Marx y Jenny se comprometieron en matrimonio. Tanto la familia de Jenny como la de Marx no estaban entusiasmadas con la pareja, lo que hizo que ambos tardaran 7 años en casarse finalmente. La vida de ambos estuvo marcada por la colaboración, ya que Jenny transcribía y traducía las obras de su marido. Los dos tuvieron 7 hijos, dos de los cuales murieron de enfermedades relacionadas con la pobreza en la que vivían.La principal obra de Karl Marx, titulada "El Capital" (Das Kapital), tardó 16 años en completarse. Durante este período, él y su familia vivieron épocas de gran necesidad y casi siempre fueron apoyados por su principal amigo y colaborador, Friedrich Engels. Su esposa, aunque era hija de un barón, no podía mantener a la numerosa familia durante mucho tiempo. Y a pesar del reconocimiento que recibió el autor tras su muerte, sus libros no causaron mucho revuelo durante su publicación.Marx es conocido como el fundador de un área de conocimiento dentro de las ciencias humanas. Sus obras tratan de historia, filosofía, economía y sociología. Es innegable la contribución de Marx a la economía, especialmente en la teoría del valor económico y el desarrollo de conceptos como la plusvalía y la fetiche de la mercancía. Para la historia, la concepción materialista se considera un punto de inflexión. Pensar una salida del capitalismo, buscando nuevas formas de producción y distribución económica que igualaran a los hombres en sus condiciones materiales y sociales, liberándolos de la alienación, fue uno de los mayores esfuerzos de la teoría de Marx.La obra de Marx se analiza casi siempre a partir de sus influencias intelectuales, como Hegel, Fauerbach, Ricardo y Adam Smith. El alcance de sus obras es inconmensurable, pero podemos citar la Revolución Rusa como uno de los acontecimientos relacionados con el impacto de su obra. Su nombre se asocia invariablemente a las teorías sobre el comunismo, el socialismo y la revolución.Karl Marx murió el 14 de marzo de 1883 en Londres.
