Mit den Briefen aus den Jahren 1930-1935 findet die Veroffentlichung des Briefwechsels zwischen den Freunden Barth und Thurneysen nach langer Pause ihre Fortsetzung. Den Anfang hatte mit den beiden 1973 und 1974 herausgegebenen Banden (1913-1921 und 1921-1930) Eduard Thurneysen selbst gemacht. Sein Tod im Jahr 1974 unterbrach die Publikation zwar fur lange Zeit. Nun bot sich aber die Chance, die Korrespondenz aus den ereignisreichen Jahren von Barths Ubernahme der Bonner Professur bis zu seiner Entlassung anders darzubieten als die fruhere. Thurneysen sah sich noch aus personlichen Rucksichten zu z.T. starken Kurzungen veranlasst. Dagegen wird der Briefwechsel in diesem Band nun vollstandig und ungekurzt wiedergegeben - einschliesslich der Briefe, die Barths Mitarbeiterin Charlotte von Kirschbaum, oft in Barths Vertretung, an Thurneysen schrieb und von ihm erhielt. Auch in die schweren Konflikte, in die das enge Verhaltnis zwischen ihr und Barth sie beide, Barths Frau Nelly und auch den gemeinsamen Freund in Basel brachte, gewahrt der Briefwechsel einen offenen Einblick. In den ersten Jahren uberwiegt in diesen Briefen die heitere Gelassenheit breiten Erzahlens - eine reich fliessende Quelle auch fur das, was sich in den weiteren Lebenszusammenhangen der Freunde abspielte. Als dann aber in Deutschland unter dem Druck des NS-Regimes alte und neue innerkirchliche Gegensatze zu Entscheidungen drangen, spiegeln die zeitweise fast taglichen Mitteilungen die steigende Spannung der Lage in rasch wechselnden Momentaufnahmen: auf der einen Seite die Innenperspektive eines an fuhrender Stelle Beteiligten mit seinen dezidierten Urteilen, auf der anderen die Aussenansicht des treuen Weggefahrten jenseits der Grenze, der Barths einsamen Weg meist vorbehaltlos mitging, bisweilen aber auch zur Massigung riet. Hinter den bekannten, in der Offentlichkeit vertretenen Positionen, die Geschichte gemacht haben, erscheinen menschliche Gesichter mit ihren Leidenschaften und Anfechtungen. Ein ausfuhrlicher Anmerkungsapparat, der den aktuellen Stand der Forschung umfassend berucksichtigt, erhellt die Hintergrunde der in den Briefen erwahnten Ereignisse und vermittelt alle sonstigen zum Verstandnis der Texte erforderlichen Informationen. Karl Barth (1886-1968) studierte Theologie in Bern, Berlin, Tubingen, Marburg und war von 1909 bis 1921 Pfarrer in Genf und Safenwil. Mit seiner Auslegung des Romerbriefes (1919, 1922) begann eine neue Epoche der evangelischen Theologie. Dieses radikale Buch trug ihm einen Ruf als Honorarprofessor nach Gottingen ein, spater wurde er Ordinarius in Munster und Bonn. Er war Mitherausgeber von Zwischen den Zeiten (1923-1933), der Zeitschrift der Dialektischen Theologie. Karl Barth war der Autor der Barmer Theologischen Erklarung und Kopf des Widerstands gegen die Gleichschaltung der Kirchen durch den Nationalsozialismus. 1935 wurde Barth von der Bonner Universitat wegen Verweigerung des bedingungslosen Fuhrereids entlassen. Er bekam sofort eine Professur in Basel, blieb aber mit der Bekennenden Kirche in enger Verbindung. Sein Hauptwerk, Die Kirchliche Dogmatik, ist die bedeutendste systematisch-theologische Leistung des 20. Jahrhunderts.
