Das ist die Bedeutung von "Kara" oder Leere im Karate." Karate bedeutet nichts weiter als "mit leeren Händen." Doch bevor solche Weisheiten in Japan gelebt und niedergeschrieben wurden, hatte Karate einen schweren Stand in Japan. Denn Karate an sich ist keine urjapanische Kampfkunst. Die Basis aller uns heute bekannten asiatischen Kampfkünste liegt weit in der Menschheitsgeschichte verborgen. Faktisch breitete sich jedoch ähnlich wie in Europa, das durch die griechische Kultur einschlägig beeinflusst wurde, eine Kampfkunstkultur aus. So hatten sich territorial und ethnisch verschieden Systeme und Stile von Kampfkünsten in Ostasien herausgebildet. Jene heute näher zu bestimmen ist wegen der fehlenden Schriftlichkeit beinahe unmöglich. Auf Okinawa reichen die Aufzeichnungen und Überlieferungen nur bis ins frühe 18. Jahrhundert zurück und liefern keine konkreten Angaben über die Entstehung des Karate. Bekannt ist nur, dass es schon lange existierte. Deshalb fast man diese frühen Formen unter dem Begriff Kempo zusammen. Diese frühen Zweikampfformen kamen auch nach Okinawa, der größten Insel der Ryukyu- Inseln. Teilsweise wurden sie von Händlern, teilweise von Flüchtigen und schließlich auch durch das Militär fremder Aggressoren nach Okinawa mitgebracht. Jene Handelsbeziehungen bauten sich vor allem um das 13. Jahrhundert auf, als sich das erste Königreich auf den Ryukyu- Inseln formierte.
