When I started learning japanese, I started with Hiragana and Katakana, I learned it in two days.

Then I started with Kanjis, at the start was easy, the first 100 kanjis, most are Pictographics, which mean they are images of what they represent.

Little by little the kanjis were getting complicated, and I started to feel frustrated. Since on average to be able to read well in Japanese, you need at least the knowledge of about 2000 to 2500 kanjis.
