About the Book

English summary: The Han Dynasty is esteemed as one of the most important and glorious epochs of Chinese history. The founder of the dynasty was Liu Bang, who grew up as the son of a poor farmer and struggled in a civil war for to become emperor. Such a climb from peasant to emperor only happened one other time in the person of Zhu Yuanzhang, 1500 years later in the Ming Dynasty. In this study, Matthias Hahn concentrates on three pieces of zaju-theater, which were written during the Ming Dynasty and concern the subject of the founding of the Han Dynasty. Han yuanshuai an du Chencang (The Han Supreme Commander Secretly Traverses Chencang), Yun jimosu Sui He pian (A Useful Clever Trick, Read Here by Sui He to Ying Bu) and Han qongqing yi jin huan xiang (The Officer of Han Returns Home Dressed in Brocade) all take place in the last years of the civil war and examine the conflict between Liu Bang and his nemesis Xiang Yu from different perspectives. Matthias Hahn presents these texts for the first time in a western language translation. He compares the dramatized results in detail with reports from the dynastic histories and other works of history and offers with his findings a broad glimpse into the connections between fact and fiction in Chinese literature.
