Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 2,0, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg (Germanistisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: HS "Franz Kafka: Die sogenannten Zürauer Aphorismen", Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Selbst ein knappes Jahrhundert nach der Erstveröffentlichung von Franz Kafkas "Die Verwandlung" ist der Text immer noch eine Herausforderung für Übersetzer, wie ein Beispiel aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit wieder einmal eindringlich bewiesen hat. In einer englischen, anlässlich des 125. Geburtstags des Autors besorgten Übersetzung, konfrontiert der Übersetzer Michael Hofmann den Leser gleich auf der ersten Seite mit der Bezeichnung Gregor Samsas als 'monströse Kakerlake'1 und entfachte damit erneut einen schon lange schwelenden Disput über die Natur des von Kafka umschriebenen Ungeziefers. Dies mag dem Kenner der Originalfassung übertrieben erscheinen, doch in der anglo-amerikanischen Literaturkritik hat eben diese Diskussion bereits eine lange Tradition. So behandelte der russische Schriftsteller Vladimir Nabokov in Vorlesungen über Kafkas Werk den Punkt ausführlich. Auf die Frage nach der Art des Ungeziefers welches Kafka darstellen wollte antwortet er: Commentators say cockroach, which of course does not make sense. A cockroach is an insect that is flat in shape with large legs, and Gregor is anything but flat: he is convex on both sides, belly and back, and his legs are small. He approaches a cockroach in only one respect: his coloration is brown. That is all2.
