Worüber lachen wir und warum? Gibt es unterschiedliche Arten des Lachens? Zweifellos ist es komisch, wenn Buster Keaton - amerikanischer Stummfilmkomiker und Meister des Slapsticks - auf einer Bananenschale ausrutscht. Ist es aber nicht ebenso komisch, wenn er genau dies nicht tut, d.h. trotz Bananenschale auf dem Boden gar nichts passiert? An beiden Filmstellen lachen wir, obwohl hier erwartungsgemäß ein Gag den anderen ausschließen müsste. Die Frage ist also, welche Art von Komik diesen und ähnlichen Szenen zugrunde liegt und warum wir über beide lachen können. Um das herauszufinden, möchte ich mich im Rahmen dieser Arbeit eingehend mit zwei bedeutenden Theorien beschäftigen, die sich mit der Entstehung der Komik auseinandersetzen. Henri Bergson, ein französischer Philosoph, stellte sich schon in seinem Werk "Das Lachen" die Frage nach den verschiedenen Arten der Komik und des Komischen. Diese wurde von Sigmund Freud, dem österreichischen Neurologen, später wieder aufgegriffen. In seinem Werk "Der Witz und seine Beziehung zum Unbewußten" (1972) untersucht er sehr ausführlich die verschiedenen Techniken des Witzes, aber auch des allgemein Komischen und des Humors. Ob die beiden Theorien tatsächlich auf die Komik der Stummfilme Buster Keatons anzuwenden sind - denn beide Theorien erheben schließlich den Anspruch auf Allgemeingültigkeit - soll im Laufe der Arbeit mit einer Filmanalyse geprüft werden. Dazu werden drei verschiedene Szenen aus den Filmen Cops (1922), Sherlock Jr. (1924) und The Navigator (1924) betrachtet. Konkret soll darauf eingegangen werden, welche Komik den Gags in diesen Szenen zugrunde liegt und ob die beiden Theorien es schaffen, diese eindeutig zu charakterisieren.
