Acabamos pues de cruzar la frontera del tercer milenio.

Queridos jóvenes, ustedes son los que tienen que cumplir con un rol preponderante en el nuevo ritmo de la marcha que el mundo tiene que adquirir. Ustedes tienen que ser los verdaderos protagonistas de esta fase de la historia.

Nuestro mundo no anda bien. No hace falta ser demasiado sutil para advertirlo. Lo testimonian las guerras, el hambre, la miseria, la envidia, el materialismo, el interés por las cosas secundarias, la inmadurez, la depresión, la angustia, las crisis de "evasión", las inseguridades, la relativización de la verdad...

Nuestro mundo no anda bien.

Y si nuestro mundo no anda bien, no podemos adoptar una postura cobarde, al estilo de los punks, que bajo el slogan de "El mundo está podrido... reventemos", como el avestruz esconden la cabeza ante el peligro, para no sentir la obligación de hacer frente a las circunstancias adversas. No tenemos ningún derecho a quedarnos de brazos cruzados, cuando Dios mismo ha muerto con los brazos abiertos para infundirnos confianza en la victoria.

Si nuestro mundo anda mal, eso quiere decir que no ha caminado por donde tenía que caminar. Por eso tiene que cambiar sus rumbos; tenemos que hacerle cambiar de rumbo.

¿Cuál es, queridos jóvenes, la nueva manera de caminar que el mundo necesita?

El mundo es un gran enigma, un gran problema. Y Jesucristo es la única respuesta y solución.

Él es el hombre que partió la historia en dos. El hombre que nadie puede verdaderamente conocer y no amar. El hombre del corazón traspasado por amor a los hombres. El hombre-Dios.

Por todo eso, queridos jóvenes, quisiera acompañarlos y ayudarlos a transitar los primeros pasos de este milenio en esta etapa tan importante de la historia. y quiero hacerlo recordando al Papa Magno; Juan Pablo II, que con su vida y con su muerte nos marcó el rumbo a seguir en el tercer milenio.

En este libro no encontrarán cosas científicas, ni demasiada literatura, ni demasiados tecnicismos. En su origen hay reflexiones muy viejas, algunas charlas que he tenido que dar, algunos sermones que he tenido que predicar...

Simplemente quiero ofrecerles la frescura del mensaje de Cristo a las almas como las de ustedes, queridos jóvenes, que están llamadas a cosas grandes. En vano buscarán, entonces, muchas citas o referencias tomadas de distintos autores. Sí encontrarán un "pantallazo" de los valores y principios que deben enseñorear la vida de los que enarbolan las banderas de Jesucristo, Señor de la historia.

Quiero agradecer al equipo de seminaristas del Instituto del Verbo Encarnado, que se ocupan de la pastoral juvenil, por la ayuda que me han prestado en la elaboración de este libro.
