Cette edition de l'Abrege de Justin des Histoires Philippiques de Trogue Pompee propose une mise a jour scientifique complete du sujet. Une copieuse introduction generale au debut du Tome I (publie en 2016) s'est proposee de resoudre en particulier l'epineux probleme de la biographie de Trogue Pompee et de la composition de son uvre. Sur un point fondamental, celui de l'orientation ideologique de l'ouvrage, la presente edition permet de refuter l'interpretation qui prevalait precedemment et qui faisait de l'historien voconce un adversaire de Rome et/ou d'Auguste. Elle etablit en particulier le caractere complementaire des Histoires Philippiques avec l'Histoire romaine de Tite-Live et l'intention de l'auteur de faire miroiter l'espoir d'une renaissance de Rome dans le cadre de la respublica restituta augusteenne. Cette orientation ideologique de l'uvre est illustree par les nombreuses notes litteraires et historiques de cet ouvrage. L'editeur (Bernard Mineo) a etabli son texte a partir de la collation de 17 manuscrits, dont 10 sont systematiquement cites dans l'apparat critique. Le stemma propose tient compte des dernieres donnees de la recherche. Une traduction moderne de l'Abrege de Justin a ainsi pu etre mise au point. Il n'existait jusqu'a present aucune edition dans la Collection des Universites de France, et la derniere traduction imprimee remonte a 1936; l'unique traduction francaise recente (2003) est une edition publiee uniquement en ligne par M.-P. Arnaud Lindet. Le Tome III, qui constitue l'ultime volume de cette edition, comprend les Livres XXIV a XLIV de l'Abrege des Histoires Philippiques de Trogue Pompee par Justin, et recouvre la periode allant de la ligue des cites grecques contre les Etoliens en 280 av. J.C. a la restitution en 20 av. J.-C. des aigles romaines capturees lors de la bataille de Carrhes et a la victoire des armees d'Auguste sur les Cantabres en 19 av. J.-C.. Y sont aussi depeints l'ensemble des conflits qui opposerent alors entre eux les Etats du monde grec ainsi que le declin moral des differents royaumes " philippiques ", issus du partage de l'empire d'Alexandre, et que les Modernes qualifient plutot " d'hellenistiques ". Le recit de Justin met egalement en relief l'irruption de Rome dans l'espace geopolitique du bassin oriental de la Mediterranee et retrace les progres de son hegemonie jusqu'a la victoire diplomatique d'Auguste sur les Parthes en 20 et celle remportee sur les Cantabres en 19, deux succes signalant la pacification du monde sous les auspices augusteens. Ce volume constitue egalement une source de premiere importance pour les guerres de Rome contre la Macedoine et pour l'histoire du peuple juif. Justin consacre une partie importante de son recit aux guerres contre Mithridate et nous a preserve uerbatim le fameux discours, rapporte au style indirect, que Trogue Pompee avait prete a ce personnage au moment ou il s'engageait dans la lutte contre Rome. De nombreuses notes litteraires ont ete redigees par l'editeur (Bernard Mineo) pour accompagner le texte. Des notes historiques tres riches ont ete ajoutees par Giuseppe Zecchini, Professeur d'Histoire romaine a l'Universite Catholique de Milan. Une abondante bibliographie a jour sur les sujets etudies dans ce Tome III est egalement proposee, ainsi qu'un index general couvrant les trois volumes de l'edition.
