About the Book

DEATH OF MEDIEVAL TIMES struck down a renowned scientist, Malcolm Casadaban. He was infected, not in a remote village in an underdeveloped country, but in the city of Chicago, at a respected institution of higher learning, the University of Chicago. Amid the initial shock and fear, investigators scrambled to discovered how it happened. But other forces, powerful and influential, wanted the truth hidden. Investigators were silenced; a false story of a "careless researcher" who destroyed himself in "the perfect storm" was created. One woman, Dr. Joany Chou, did not accept the lie. She knew Malcolm, her former husband, too well to believe it. Justice for Malcolm is the tale of Dr. Chou's efforts, in the face of falsehoods, governmental roadblocks, and death threats, to uncover the truth of Malcolm Casadaban's death. The book reveals the shocking realities of government-sanctioned human experimentation and a casual disregard for the sanctity of life among those in higher institutions entrusted to heal, rather than to harm. It also introduces readers to the man behind the terrifying and false headlines, Malcolm Casadaban, who loved his family and had a passion for science, a gentle and generous soul who had no defense against the manipulations of ambitious and ruthless colleagues. Justice for Malcolm is about one woman's determination to persevere for the sake of justice, for personal integrity, and for love.
About the Author: Dr. Joany Chou holds a Ph.D. in virology from the University of Chicago in 1986 and a B.S. from her undergraduate study at the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Chou has published numerous scholarly articles on antibiotics resistance transposable elements and later on the biology of human infectious agent, Herpes Simplex Virus I. Dr. Chou also holds patents for several breakthrough discoveries in the areas of gene therapy, tumor therapy and therapy in prevention and treatment of viral and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Chou was married to renowned scientist, Dr. Malcolm Casadaban, with whom she has two daughters. Dr. Chou fought for and won a major victory for the rights of laboratory researchers in the landmark legal case Chou v University of Chicago (2002). In 2009, Dr. Casadaban, a professor and researcher at the University of Chicago, died tragically from a plague infection in the blood under mysterious circumstances. Dr. Chou has dedicated the years since 2009 to uncovering and exposing the truth behind his death. This book entails her path and endeavor in her investigation in seeking the truth and bringing justice for Malcolm.
