About the Book

Let's not kid ourselves - most of us wouldn't last a day in the jungle. We don't have the skills, we don't have the strength, we don't have a courage. That's okay, though, because as readers of comics we can live vicariously through some of the best, most heroic, characters in the deep, dark recesses, far beyond civilization. This collection showcases some of the 1950s greatest jungle heroes: Jann of the Jungle; Waku, Prince of the Bantu; Cliff Mason, White Hunter! The stories were drawn by some of the top artists of the day, including Fred Kida, Syd Shores, Dick Ayers and Joe Maneely. The first 7 issues of this series are public domain, before the masthead was changed to make Jann of The Jungle the title character. How they missed the renewals for these early issues we likely will never know - but who cares? They did, and we all benefit!

It would be impossible to overstate the importance of the early Silver Age to the comics universe(s). It was just before Peter Parker joined the ranks, just as Reed Richards and his team were about to be launched into space, and even before Bruce Banner was belted by gamma rays! Those creators were busy with Fin Fang Foom and Mechano and incredible stories of other worlds and outlandish creatures. Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Joe Sinnott, Don heck, Dick Ayers - they are all over these pages, the eleven issues of this historic comic title that fell into the public domain (#85-95; 1961-1962). You are there, right at the beginning - the best comic reading you will find!
