Oeuvre en 5 Volumes Donatien Alphonse François de Sade, né le 2 juin 1740 et mort le 2 décembre 1814, est un homme de lettres français, romancier et philosophe, longtemps voué à l'anathème en raison de la part accordée dans son oeuvre à l'érotisme, associé à des actes impunis de violence et de cruauté (fustigations, tortures, meurtres, incestes, viols, etc.). L'expression d'un athéisme virulent est l'un des thèmes les plus récurrents de ses écrits. Détenu sous tous les régimes politiques (monarchie, république, consulat, empire), il est resté enfermé - sur plusieurs périodes, pour des raisons et dans des conditions fort diverses - pendant vingt-sept ans sur les soixante-quatorze années que dura sa vie. Lui-même, en passionné de théâtre, écrit: Les entractes de ma vie ont été trop longs . Il meurt à l'asile d'aliénés de Charenton. De son vivant, les titres de marquis de Sade ou de comte de Sade lui ont été alternativement attribués, mais il est plus connu par la postérité sous son titre de naissance de marquis. Dès la fin du XIXe siècle, il est surnommé le divin marquis, en référence au divin Arétin, premier auteur érotique des temps modernes (XVIe siècle). Occultée et clandestine pendant tout le XIXe siècle, son oeuvre littéraire est réhabilitée au XXe siècle par Jean-Jacques Pauvert qui le sort de la clandestinité en publiant ouvertement ses oeuvres sous son nom d'éditeur, malgré la censure officielle dont il triomphe par un procès en appel en 1957. La dernière étape vers la reconnaissance est sans doute représentée par l'entrée de Sade dans la Bibliothèque de la Pléiade en 1990. Son nom est passé à la postérité sous forme de substantif. Dès 1834, le néologisme sadisme, qui fait référence aux actes de cruauté décrits dans ses oeuvres, figure dans un dictionnaire; le mot finit par être transposé dans toutes les langues. Résumé Juliette est élevée dans un couvent, mais à l'âge de treize ans, elle est séduite par une femme qui entreprend de lui expliquer que la moralité, la religion et les idées de cette sorte sont dépourvues de sens. Toutes les considérations philosophiques évoquées au cours du récit sont de cet ordre: toutes les idées touchant à Dieu, la morale, les remords, l'amour, sont attaquées. La conclusion générale est que le seul but dans la vie est de s'amuser sans se soucier, aux dépens de quiconque . Juliette pousse ceci à l'extrême en assassinant de nombreuses personnes, y compris divers proches et amis. Pendant le roman, qui suit Juliette de l'âge de treize à environ trente ans, l'anti-héroïne dévergondée s'engage dans pratiquement chaque forme de dépravation et rencontre toute une série de libertins comme elle, tels que la féroce Clairwil, dont la passion principale est d'assassiner de jeunes hommes, Saint-Fond, un nabab incestueux de cinquante ans qui assassine son père, torture quotidiennement des jeunes filles à mort, allant même jusqu'à ourdir un complot ambitieux visant à provoquer une famine qui éliminera la moitié de la population française. Minski, l' ogre des Apennins, est un anthropophage infligeant au corps humain les tortures et les mutilations les plus inventives.
