Con esta obra Buenos Aires se convierte, por primera vez, en el escenario de otra forma de contar. La ciudad es vista lejos de las estéticas dominantes de su entorno.

Roberto Arlt abre un nuevo espacio literario con influencia dostoievskiana y temática picaresca. En él consagra el perfil de hombres que, sometidos por la pobreza y la continua pérdida de fe, sobreviven en las calles de las ciudades.

Silvio Astier es un personaje condenado a una vida mísera pero que sueña con un porvenir lleno de aventuras y fama. Aunque, al inicio de la novela, su único medio para sobrevivir es el robo, Silvio se aleja del ladrón común. Es un pícaro lleno de infinita curiosidad intelectual, seducido por la ciencia y lector de Baudelaire.

El futuro que se dibuja para el protagonista de El juguete rabioso lo llena de desasosiego. Baldía y fea como una rodilla desnuda es mi alma. A partir de aquí, se hace visible la transformación del personaje. La certeza de lo baldío y de la inutilidad del esfuerzo marcan la trayectoria existencial de Silvio.

Al final, el juguete rabioso determina que la víctima pase a ser el verdugo, y que el no ser prevalezca como única salida.

Para cualquier lector que conozca la vida de Roberto Arlt verá las semejanzas entre el autor y su personaje. Arlt como uno de sus personajes favoritos, también intentó sobrevivir inventando artefactos. Vivió también al borde del abismo de la supervivencia y fue también, a su manera, un particular hereje.

Tal vez estas palabras de Juan Carlos Onetti capten a qué nos referimos:


...había nacido para escribir sus desdichas infantiles, adolescentes, adultas. Lo hizo con rabia y con genio, cosas que le sobraban. Todo Buenos Aires, por lo menos, leyó este libro. Los intelectuales interrumpieron los dry martinis para encoger los hombros y rezongar piadosamente que Arlt no sabía escribir. No sabía, es cierto, y desdeñaba el idioma de los mandarines; pero sí dominaba la lengua y los problemas de millones de argentinos, incapaces de comentarlo en artículos literarios, capaces de comprenderlo y sentirlo como amigo que acude -hosco, silencioso o cínico- en la hora de la angustia. Hablo de arte y de un gran, extraño artista.
