Fehlt das Verständnis für die Sprache des jeweiligen Gegenübers, wird die Kommunikation früher oder später scheitern. Sprache hat nicht nur mit dem Verstehen des jeweiligen Sprachsystems (Deutsch, Italienisch, Chinesisch etc.) zu tun, sondern auch mit der Anpassung des eigenen Sprachverhaltens an den Wandel der Zeit und an die daraus resultierenden Neologismen in unserem Sprachalltag. Das angeführte Zitat Tucholskys auf die heutige Zeit angewandt, beschreibt die Sprachbarriere, die sich schon heute im Sprachverständnis zwischen Erwachsenen und Jugendlichen auftut. Geil, fett und chillig sind nur wenige der jugendsprachlichen Ausdrücke, die in keiner wissenschaftlichen Fachsprache zu finden sind, sondern mehr dem Inhalt des jugendlichen Sprachgebrauchs zuzuordnen sind. Nachdem das Thema Jugendsprache, ausgelöst durch die Jugendrevolten Ende der 70er Jahre, zum Gegenstand öffentlicher Diskussionen wurde, wurde sie auch Objekt der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschung. Die erste Untersuchung zur Jugend unternahm der Germanist Helmut Henne. Dieser musste 1981 bedauernd resümieren, dass Jugendsprache als Forschungsobjekt in der linguistischen Jugendsprachforschung nicht existierte. Jugendsprache als Forschungsgegenstand ist ein offenes und weites Feld, Kenntnisse der Sozio- und Pragmalinguistik sind unabdingbar, die Herangehensweise an dieses Thema erweist sich mehr als vielfältig.
