En el año 1530, Paolo Grillandi, juez pontificio presidente del tribunal secular de Roma, realiza una investigación sobre un turbio homicidio y un infame rapto descubriendo poco a poco actividades oscuras de personajes ilustres dedicados al satanismo, el asesinato y la sexualidad más bestial y, tratando en definitiva de hacer justicia, pero no sin un grave perjuicio personal, condenará estas personas malvadas a morir en la hoguera, según los criterios legales del momento, al ser autores no solo de uno, sino de una larga serie de delitos; entretanto el camino que el magistrado debe recorrer para conseguir las pruebas es largo, peligroso y no está exento de atentados contra su vida. Paralelamente se convierte de despiadado cazador de brujas en hombre de dudas y compasión debido a ciertas experiencias y encuentros, en primer lugar gracias al joven y cultísimo obispo Micheli, que se encuentra entre los muy pocos eclesiásticos que en esa época combaten el fanatismo en nombre a la amorosa Razón divina. Durante auge de la caza de brujas del Renacimiento, tras varios golpes de efecto hasta la última página, el lector encuentra, entre otras cosas, un duelo a espada con el diablo en persona, el saco de Roma, filósofos y magos gnósticos, esclavos, bandidos, santos y endemoniados, en una Italia ya próxima al Concilio de Trento, distinta de la actual y sin embargo similar en ciertos aspectos. En la novela, histórica pero con aspectos policiacos, aparecen grandes figuras que pasaron a la historia y personajes históricos menores como el abogado Ponzinibio, enemigo de la violencia con que actuaban tanto la Inquisición católica como los tribunales religiosos protestantes y cuya imagen preludia, con gran anticipación, la de aquellos adversarios de la pena de muerte como Beccaria, y personajes reales como el endemoniado Balestrini y el terrible inquisidor dominico Spina. El mismo protagonista, Grillandi, es un personaje histórico, aunque en realidad se trató de un fanático abogado acusador de brujas y no de un juez pontificio. Entre los personajes está Mora, joven y dócil amante del juez, que esconde secretos terribles y dolorosos, figura no secundaria dado que es de ella de quien el magistrado obtiene la solución completa del caso. También son personajes de ficción el ambiguo caballero Rinaldi y el luciferino príncipe de Biancacroce, figura esta siempre presente al fondo y nunca en primer plano, como corresponde a los grandes manipuladores: una especie de jefe mafioso oculto detrás de su segundo, el visible Rinaldi. También el obispo Micheli es un personaje de ficción, aunque es un reflejo de los altos prelados, que existieron realmente, Pole, Sadoleto y Morone, que fueron acusados de herejía por la Inquisición porque predicaban la caridad evangélica contra la violencia de los inquisidores; y también son de ficción los personajes del párroco de Grottaferrata, el sicario Trallo, el espadachín Fuentes Villata, el jefe de sicarios y hermano de Marietta, el juez Salati y el teniente Rissoni. En la novela se recrea la mentalidad del siglo XVI, aunque, como bien saben los historiadores, al mirar al pasado hace falta transmitir, en la medida de lo posible, el sentir de la época, porque si no nos arriesgamos a realizar juicios históricos; por ejemplo, hoy la pena capital se juzga normalmente como algo atroz, pero en el siglo XVI y durante mucho tiempo se consideró un castigo obvio y se pensaba que el asesino arrepentido expiaba con su muerte todos sus pecados, ascendiendo de inmediato al Paraíso; así, el personaje del obispo Micheli, a pesar de su idealismo, no llega a oponerse a las condenas a muerte de asesinos, por lo que aprueba la pena de hoguera infligida a los componentes de la banda criminal satánica descubierta y arrestada, al final de la novela, por el protagonista, el juez Grillandi.
