About the Book

English summary: The towns of Speyer, Worms and Mainz, abbreviated by the Hebrew acronym 'SchUM', have remained a landmark in global Jewish consciousness until today. This volume introduces and assesses the literal and musical narratives of the three 'SchUM' communities. Contributions from sixteen different authors show to what extent German Jewry was rooted in the SchUM communities as well as how it was interwoven with German narrative and pious culture, despite the constant presence of exclusion and persecution beyond all religious differences. The Hebrew and Yiddish stories bear witness to an Ashkenazi Jewish concept of Heimat, in which Worms for example is seen as the 'little Jerusalem', with its own legal and spiritual authority that even goes as far as expecting the birth of the Messiah in Worms. One cannot really get to know this part of the Rhineland region without knowledge of this narrative culture, just as one cannot know it without knowledge of the sagas and songs of the Nibelung.
