Das Ausmass der Judenverfolgung im faschistischen Italien wird meist unterschatzt. Erst spat beginnt die Aufarbeitung der Weichenstellungen ab 1922, der antisemitischen Propaganda und ihrer Erfolge und des Einschnitts durch die Rassengesetze 1938. Die italienische Literatur hat hingegen schon fruh auf NS-Verbrechen aufmerksam gemacht und die psychisch-sozialen Auswirkungen, den Schock, aber auch die politische Blindheit der Verfolgten und die Verdrangungsmechanismen der Nachkriegsgesellschaft thematisiert. Isabella von Treskow untersucht in ihrer Studie zwischen 1954 und 1974 erschienene Romane von Marta Ottolenghi Minerbi, Giorgio Bassani, Francesco Burdin und Elsa Morante im Zusammenhang mit der schleppenden Aufklarung der Judenverfolgung in Italien. Dabei werden Kritik und Affirmation gangiger Thesen zur Judenverfolgung, intertexuelle Bezuge zu zeitgenossischen Faschismusforschern, der Umgang mit der judischen Erinnerungskultur, der Zusammenhang von Fiktion und Erinnerung sowie die Darstellung von Faschisten, NS-Tatern, Besatzung, Kirche und Zivilbevolkerung in den jeweiligen Romanen untersucht. Es zeigt sich, dass die Romane fur die komplexen Konstellationen und traumatischen Verletzungen sensibilisieren und durch ihre Thematisierung der Shoah eine kritische Position einnehmen, dass sie aber nicht zwingend fortschrittlicher als der dominante historische Diskurs sind. Vor allem aber werden die besondere Eignung von Fiktion, die Judenverfolgung in Italien greifbar und individuelles Erleben nachvollziehbar zu machen und ihr nicht zu vernachlassigender literarischer Beitrag zur politischen Meinungsbildung in Italien von der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit bis in die 1970er Jahre hinein deutlich.
