About the Book

In Band 1 der Festschrift fur den vor einhundert Jahren in Sondershausen verstorbenen Rabbiner Prof. Philipp Heidenheim, der judische Gemeinden beider Schwarzburger Landesteile betreute und in ihrem Streben nach burgerlicher Emanzipation und gesellschaftlicher Integration lenkte und forderte, wurden erstmals neuere Forschungen zu verschiedenen Aspekten judischen Lebens in Schwarzburg zusammengefasst. Schon im Mittelalter lebten Juden in den Territorien der Grafen und spateren Fursten von Schwarzburg. Nach den Pestpogromen von 1349 waren sie fur lange Zeit nur in wenigen Orten geduldet. Erst vom Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts an konnten sich judische Gemeinden, teils im Umfeld der furstlichen Residenzen wie Sondershausen, Arnstadt und Rudolstadt, teils in kleineren Stadten und landlichen Regionen wie Immenrode, Frankenhausen und Plaue, dauerhaft etablieren. Bis ins 19. Jahrhundert hinein besassen die Juden der Furstentumer Schwarzburg-Sondershausen und Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt den Status von 'Schutzburgern' und waren einer diskriminierenden Sondergesetzgebung unterworfen, ehe sie im Prozess einer langwierigen Gesetzesreform schrittweise die vollen Burgerrechte erlangten. Keine der schwarzburgischen Gemeinden hat den Holocaust uberdauert. Als eines der letzten sichtbaren Zeugnisse jahrhundertealten judischen Lebens in Sondershausen versteckt sich im Wald oberhalb der Stadt, am Hang des Goldners, der Friedhof der hiesigen judischen Gemeinde. 250 Jahre Geschichte der Sondershauser Juden birgt dieser Ort, von seiner Anlage im Jahr 1699 bis zur Vertreibung und Vernichtung auch dieser Gemeinde im 20. Jahrhundert. An die 200 Grabstellen, Grabsteine und Grabsteinfragmente kunden noch heute von langst vergangenen Zeiten, obwohl auch hier Verwitterung ebenso wie Vandalismus bis in die jungste Zeit deutliche Spuren hinterlassen haben und lang nicht mehr jedes Grab von einem Grabstein gekennzeichnet wird. Mehr noch als ins Leben und Sterben Einzelner geben uns diese Grabsteine und ihre Inschriften einen Einblick in das Denken und Streben einer ganzen Gesellschaft zwischen Tradition und Akkulturation, Judentum und Burgertum. In Band 2 der Publikation wurde der Versuch unternommen, die alten Denkzeichen zu lesen und zu deuten und sie durch Ubersetzung und ausfuhrlichen Kommentar einem breiteren Publikum zuganglich zu machen, auf dass das Andenken an die 'Heilige Gemeinde Sondershausen' bewahrt bleibe.
