La historia de Juana I de Castilla, mal llamada la Loca, es tan novelesca que bien podría confundirse con un culebrón televisivo, salvo porque son sesudos cronistas y no afamados guionistas quienes se encargaron de relatar lo que sucedió en aquellos años convulsos de la historia. Esta mujer, soberana de unos reinos por primera vez unidos en una sola corona, fue privada de recursos, expoliada, maltratada, ignorada y, finalmente, recluida y olvidada. Pero los cronistas dieron por buena la versión proporcionada por sus padres, por su marido, por su hijo, y aceptaron de forma acrítica que la reina estaba loca. Loca de amor por un marido que le faltaba al respeto, la encerraba y la maltrataba en privado y en público y a quien ella se enfrentaba tenazmente. Siglos después, el Romanticismo se adueñó de su historia falseando los hechos. Las escenas que han dado lugar a la leyenda de la locura de amor no sucedieron, o no ocurrieron como se cuentan, o no por las razones que se esgrimen. ¿Por qué causa Juana se ha convertido en el paradigma de la locura de amor? Quizá por la misma razón que durante siglos el asesinato de las mujeres a manos de sus maridos se ha venido calificando como crimen pasional. En verdad, de Juana I sabemos lo que contaron los hombres que escribieron sobre sus padres, sobre su marido y sobre su hijo. Las crónicas nunca la tuvieron por protagonista, nunca recogieron sus pensamientos, sus inquietudes, sus proyectos. Ni siquiera sus penalidades o sus protestas, porque como ya señaló Eduardo Galeano, la historia la escriben los hombres, los blancos, los ricos y los militares. Ellos son quienes cuentan lo que sucede y ellos hablan de lo que les concierne y desde la perspectiva de quien posee el poder. Pero, ¿qué hubiera ocurrido si la historia la hubieran contado las mujeres? Finalmente, ¿qué interés tiene para las mujeres de hoy una reina nacida en el siglo XV? Cuando menos, constatar que la misoginia y la violencia machista no son fenómenos recientes sino estructurales y transversales, desde la base hasta la cima de la pirámide social. Solo conociendo la naturaleza y raices del problema se podrán atajar sus consecuencias. "Juana I de España. La reina cautiva" no es un libro de historia, ni siquiera una novela histórica, es el relato de una periodista que relee los anales del siglo XVI con ojos de mujer y se hace preguntas sobre la vida de otra mujer que, por una sucesión de malaventuras, acabó siendo la primera reina de España.

A lo largo de mi vida profesional he escrito sobre política municipal, sobre inmigración, sobre mujeres, sobre sanidad marítima, sobre empleo, sobre pensiones... En general, sobre el mundo en que vivimos. Cuando me jubilé seguí escribiendo en un blog. Así fue como encontré a la reina Juana I de España y su historia. La primera sorpresa es que, lejos de hallar un drama medieval me he topado con una lucha despiadada por el poder que se desarrolla a caballo entre los siglos XV y XVI pero tan actual que bien podría haber ocurrido ayer o estar ocurriendo ahora mismo. Una historia fascinante que me ha suscitado nuevos interrogantes. Tantos, que no me ha quedado otro remedio que escribir sobre ella, porque escribir es la única forma que conozco de comprender las preguntas para las que no tengo respuesta.
