About the Book

Who are these people with statues along the streets of the city? What contributions did they make and why are they honoured with monuments? This book answers these questions. This updated version is larger in size with colour photos and some added monuments.Journey: The book is designed to encourage the reader to relate to the monuments, to take a journey through Edinburgh with its monuments. Maps guide the reader as to the location of the monuments, showing them in context around the city. The reader is invited to a journey of discovery, a journey of exploration.Arrangement: To support the reader the monuments are arranged by their location within the city, a chapter devoted to each of these six areas: Princes Street and its gardens; The New Town and its developments; Calton Hill; The Royal Mile; Leith; Rest of Edinburgh. Within each chapter each monument or group of monuments is accorded a section, numbered sequentially by chapter. Some of the monuments are grouped together in one section, for example the Twelve Poets in Edinburgh Park. A seventh chapter describes a sample of the many plaques on benches around the city; these too have been installed to remember people and events.Index: An index at the end of the book facilitates searching for particular monuments of interest. Why monuments? But the objective of the book is more than an exploration of Edinburgh's monuments, useful as that is. It poses questions. Why do we erect monuments and what do the monuments tell us about the city and its development? Who do we erect monuments to, and who should perhaps be honoured by monuments? The monuments are not simply static testaments to past people and events; they can open the door to what these people and events mean to us. This invites us on the journey of exploration, a journey that, by looking back in time looks forward. Edinburgh is an outward looking city and several monuments remind us of the new ideas and thoughts, the new approaches explored by philosophers and thinkers of the past and how these still influence life around the world today. Chapter 8, the final chapter, raises these questions, providing ideas for reflection, whilst noting that there are many ways of remembering people and events other than monuments of stone or metal.New Version: This book follows on from "101 plus Edinburgh Monuments" published first in 2017. Colour photographs replace the black and white photographs. The larger format of the book has enabled a larger text font to be used and the text has been revised. (The smaller physical size of "101 plus Edinburgh Monuments" makes it more suitable for carrying whilst walking around the city.) Four monuments have been added, including details of a monument that is planned for installation in the summer of 2018. This emphasizes the continuing developments of the monuments of the city.Cover: The front and back covers of the book show small photographs of some of the monuments. These are arranged in 6 rows, corresponding to the first 6 chapters of the book. The top row shows monuments along Princes Street, the second monuments of the New Town, then Calton Hill, followed by the Royal Mile and Leith with a selection of monuments around the city on the lower row.
