Estrella fulgurante y polémica en el Hollywood de finales de la década de los 70 y principio de los 80, desapareció de la escena cinematográfica con la misma rapidez que se hizo popular. Con una carrera tempestuosa decididamente desacreditada por los profesionales, renace con fuerza en los años 90 demostrando que no hay una sola oportunidad en la vida para triunfar, sino dos, o tres. De mirada sincera y con ademanes de muchacho alegre, Travolta consiguió su primera fama como Vinnie Barbarino, "Sweathog" en una serie cómica ambientada en una escuela secundaria, titulada "Welcome Back, Kotter," (ABC, 1975-79.) Travolta se comportó anteriormente como lo hacen los cantantes jóvenes que llegan al estrellato súbitamente y durante este periodo su imagen fue objeto de deseo e interés por la juventud del mundo entero. Sus primeros trabajos en el cine fueron como un adolescente sinvergüenza que recibe una lección en "Carrie" (1976), un estupendo thriller de Brian de Palma. No obstante y aunque ya tenía cierta fama por sus trabajos en televisión, su ascenso al estrellato fue con el filme "Fiebre del sábado noche" (1977), en donde interpretó con maestría al tradicional personaje urbano de origen italo-americano, que combinaba sensibilidad y ardor juvenil en las discotecas. Con el éxito de la película los críticos descubrieron sus cualidades como actor y le nominaron al oscar, al mismo tiempo que se generó un culto a su manera de vestir, hablar y, especialmente, andar. Aunque no era un bailarín todo el mundo le imitaba en sus bailes, y aunque no sabía cantar otros cantantes pusieron bellas melodías en sus labios. Cuando interpretó junto a Olivia Newton-John, "Grease" en 1978, sus canciones y bailes se convirtieron en uno de los mayores éxitos musicales de todos los tiempos.A partir de ahí, se originó un lento declive en su carrera totalmente inexplicable. Su siguiente película fue "Cowboy de ciudad" (1980), en la cual le vimos bailando con un sombrero vaquero y botas de montar, al más puro estilo tradicional norteamericano. Posteriormente da un giro total cuando interpreta un thriller titulado "Impacto" de Brian de Palma (1981.) Deseoso de volver a recuperar el público que años antes le había vitoreado, vuelve con el tema discotequero en un filme dirigido por Sylvester Stallone titulado "Staying Alive" (1983), una continuación descarada de "Fiebre del sábado noche." Pero en solamente cinco años el público ya había cambiado y sus sueños de popularidad quedan atrapados en un nuevo fracaso. Travolta languideció posteriormente durante casi una década en películas casi desconocidas, aunque no por ello dejó de trabajar puesto que consiguió volver a la televisión, destacando especialmente durante 1987 en un programa de la ABC titulado "The Dumbo Waiter" de Harold Pinter. Después vuelve de nuevo al cine para interpretar un papel secundario en "Mira quién habla," (1989), en donde los intérpretes principales son unos bebés a los que hay que poner las voces. Increíblemente el público se fija de nuevo en Travolta, se da cuenta que aún está vivo para el cine, y esta comedia romántica dirigida a un público infantil triunfa en taquilla y su imagen sale de nuevo en las portadas. El éxito fue tan grande que hubo dos secuelas más, "Mira quien habla también" (1990) y "Mira quien habla ahora" (1993), sorprendiendo con posterioridad al mundo entero cuando hizo un papel magnífico en "Pulp Fiction" (1994) de Quentin Tarantino. Ese año volvió a ocupar el número uno en las listas de Hollywood. Esta estrella resucitada encontró de pronto su mejor puesto en el cine en sus papeles de malvado, mientras trataba de ocultar su cara de buen chico tras un comportamiento degenerado e inhumano. Después efectúa un nuevo giro en su carrera cuando hace de un hombre dotado de poderes paranormales en "Phenomenon" (1996), por la que cobra 8 millones de dólares.
