Dans les annees 70 ont ete publiees des theses francaises d'Etat consacrees a Bennet, Wells et Shaw. Seul parmi les grands ecrivains anglais de l'epoque edouardienne, John Galsworthy n'avait pas encore fait l'objet d'une etude approfondie. L'auteur de The Forsyte Saga n'a pas eu beaucoup plus de chance dans les pays anglo-saxons. Huit livres on ete publies sur lui en Angleterre depuis la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, dont quatre ou cinq de qualite. Mais il s'agissait ou bien d'etudes limitees a un probleme particulier, ou de volumes de souvenirs, ou de " biographies " dans lesquelles se trouvent meles un recit plus ou moins romance, un portrait et des remarques sur l'oeuvre. La these d'Alec Frechet vient combler cette lacune d'autant plus facheuse que la renommee du Prix Nobel 1932, apres avoir subi une eclipse, jouit depuis une dizaine d'annees d'un remarquable renouveau. La version televisee de The Forsyte Saga, diffusee a plusieurs reprises par la B.B.C., a remporte un immense succes, et a ete retransmise par quarante pays, dont la France et l'U.R.S.S. La vente des romans a pris des proportions jamais atteintes du vivant de l'auteur. Alec Frechet soumet ces vingt romans a une etude systematique et minutieuse. Pour saisir la pensee Galsworthy et juger de son art sous tous ses aspects, il explore l'oeuvre entiere, les contes, les nouvelles, le theatre, les essais, les poemes - une trentaine de volumes. Homme sensible et raffine, le createur des Forsyte a su tirer parti de sa connaissance de la grande bourgeoisie, dont il etait issu, pour ecrire des recits a la fois personnels, poetiques et d'un grand interet historique et social. De naturel inquiet, Galsworthy a bien decrit ses romans lorsqu'il ecrivit qu'ils etaient " frappes de remords ". A une epoque ou la grande bourgeoisie donnait le ton, c'est toute la societe victorienne et edouardienne qu'on trouve evoquee dans ses recits.
