About the Book

Der 1809 in Frankenthal geborene und 1886 in Genf gestorbene Johann Philipp Becker gehort zu den interessantesten Gestalten deutscher Demokratiegeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Als junger radikaler Redner des Hambacher Festes, Offizier im Schweizer Sonderbundskrieg von 1847 und in der deutschen Reichsverfassungskampagne des Jahres 1849, Mitbegrunder der ersten Internationale im Jahre 1864 und der deutschen Arbeiterbewegung, hat dieser 'deutsche Garibaldi' an den Freiheitskampfen von drei Generationen teilgenommen. Die Biographie Beckers liefert zugleich ein anschauliches Beispiel dafur, welch enge Zusammenhange zwischen den verschiedenen europaischen Freiheitsbewegungen bestanden. Trotz eines imposanten Wirkens, ist Becker nach seinem Tod in Deutschland lange Zeit vergleichsweise wenig beachtet worden. In der Geschichtsschreibung der DDR und in der rheinpfalzischen Regionalgeschichte hatte er allerdings einen festen Platz. Die Beitrage des Bandes, der auf eine Tagung im Jahre 1996 zuruckgeht, befassen sich nicht nur mit Beckers politischem Wirken in Deutschland, der Schweiz und Italien, sondern auch mit Fragen der Becker-Forschung und seiner Rolle in der Geschichtskultur der Deutschen.
