About the Book

Jahrhunderts und ist fur Fechter, Kampfkunst-Forscher und Historiker gleichermaen eine Bereicherung English: Joachim Meyer wrote an impressive text book on the state of German martial arts in the second half of the 16th Century. At the time in which it was printed, it was an important and pioneering work, for it was the first book of its kind, which was actually written for students of swordsmanship and described a systematic learning system. The author Alexander Kiermayer has transferred the work of Joachim Meyer in the modern German language and has processed it so that it is easily accessible for the modern reader. The original unique wood-cuts, are also included in the translation. To allow the reader an easier understanding of the text by Joachim Meyer, the corresponding relevant parts have been extracted from the woodcuts and arranged next to the descriptive text. Thus, the book includes within the 240 pages 189 illustrations from contemporary woodcuts, and graphics. This first part contains the general part of the "Fundamental description of the knightly art of fencing for free men and nobles," and the sections on the long sword and Dusack. The historical background of Joachim Meyer, and his art is explained in the introduction. The modern approach in this book provides a clear understanding of one of the most important books of the 16th century, and is for fencers, martial arts researchers and historians equally enriching.
