Esta traducción intenta reflejar el Libro de los Cambios, tal como lo veían Cheng Yi (1033-1107) y Zhu Xi (1130-1200), e incluye la primera traducción al español de sus comentarios.

Desde la dinastía Ming hasta la dinastía Qing, es decir desde el siglo XIV hasta inicios del siglo XX, la interpretación de Zhu Xi fue promovida por el gobierno imperial. A su vez, Zhu Xi, basó su comentario en el de Cheng Yi, aunque tienen algunas diferencias de interpretación.

Para Cheng Yi, el Libro de los Cambios permitía aprender e interiorizar el principio moral, o el principio del Camino (Dao li 道理), el orden moral de las cosas y las personas. El comentario de Cheng, que terminó en 1099, adquirió rápidamente renombre dentro de la red de eruditos que se convertiría en la escuela Cheng-Zhu un siglo más tarde.

El Yichuan Yizhuan de Cheng se complementó en 1188 con el comentario de Zhu Xi, y ambos adquirieron carácter oficial en 1715, cuando se volvieron a publicar juntos en una nueva edición patrocinada por el imperio, el Zhouyi zhezhong 周易折中 (Anotaciones Balanceadas de los Cambios de los Zhou). Esta fue la edición que Richard Wilhelm y muchos otros sinólogos occidentales del siglo XX, tomaron como base para sus traducciones.

Zhu Xi es conocido como el "sintetizador" del renacimiento confuciano de la dinastía Song, aunque su síntesis fue muy selectiva. Lo que es justo decir es que sintetizó las enseñanzas de la escuela Cheng en un todo coherente y las elevó a un nuevo nivel de sofisticación. En particular, en lo que respecta al Libro de los Cambios, sintetizó los enfoques xiangshu y yili de Shao Yong y Cheng Yi, desarrollando una teoría de interpretación completamente nueva que daba la misma importancia a las dimensiones gráfica y textual del Libro de los Cambios.
