Considerada la primera novela moderna de la tradicion literaria china, Jin Ping Mei es uno de los libros mas celebrados y malditos de la cultura asiatica. Su titulo juega con los nombres de tres de los personajes femeninos —Pan Jinlian, Li Ping’er y Pang Chunmei—, en torno a los cuales gira la accion de la novela. La mencion mas temprana de esta obra es de 1596 y se halla en una carta escrita por el famoso letrado Yuan Hongdao que dice: «Reclinado sobre la almohada, le he echado un vistazo, y sus paginas desprenden una bruma erotica». Fascinados con la lectura, los letrados hicieron circular diferentes capitulos manuscritos de la novela hasta su primera edicion en 1617. Por supuesto, ningun autor quiso ver su nombre asociado a una novela tan erotica, satirica y descarnada, de modo que solo conocemos el singular pseudonimo de quien la compuso: el Erudito de las Carcajadas de Lanling. Compuesta por 100 capitulos, la historia narra el esplendor y la decadencia de la casa de Ximen Qing. Comienza con la relacion adultera entre Pan Jinlian, esposa de Wu Zhi, y Ximen Qing, un lujurioso mercader sin escrupulos, y el nucleo de su trama se centra en las relaciones de poder y sexo entre el propio Ximen Qing y sus esposas y sirvientas, junto con otros personajes de todo signo y condicion. Inedita hasta ahora en nuestra lengua, esta primera traduccion del chino a cargo de Alicia Relinque supone un hito en la recuperacion de la novelistica asiatica, no solo por la importancia que tiene esta obra en su contexto cultural, sino por ser la version mas completa a una lengua occidental que existe actualmente en el mundo. Alicia Relinque es profesora de literatura china en la Universidad de Granada, en la que ha hecho su doctorado. Ha ejercido funciones docentes y de investigacion en la Universidad de Pekin, la School of Oriental and African Studies de Londres y la City University de Hong Kong. Aparte de diversas publicaciones academicas, es traductora de clasicos chinos como El corazon de la literatura, de Liu Xie, y de Historia del ala oeste, de Wan Shifu.
