About the Author: Biographie Gustave Aimard est né à Paris en 1818 de parents inconnus. Son nom officiel est Olivier Aimard, mais plus tard il se donnera lui-même le prénom de Gustave. Ce n'est qu'après sa mort que l'on découvrira que son père s'appelait Sébastiani, qui après avoir été général, fut ensuite ambassadeur et même ministre.[citation nécessaire] Selon le New York Times du 9 juillet 1883, sa mère se nommait Félicité de Faudoas, mariée avec Anne Jean Marie René Savary, duc de Rovigo. Abandonné par ses parents, il s'enfuit à 9 ans du domicile de sa famille adoptive, les Gloux, et s'engage comme mousse sur un bateau. Il débarque en Patagonie, puis se rend en Amérique du Nord où il mène une vie aventureuse, notamment comme chercheur d'or et trappeur1. Il s'enrôle dans la marine en 1835 avant de déserter quatre ans plus tard lors d'une escale au Chili. Il épouse une Comanche, puis entame des voyages en Europe et dans le Caucase. En 1847, Aimard retourne de plus en France. En cette année, sa demi-soeur, Fanny Sebastiani de Praslin, est assassinée par son époux, le duc Théobald de Praslin. Théobald se suicide peu après. Pendant plusieurs mois, Henriette Desportes, la gouvernante de la famille, est interrogée à la Conciergerie, la prison pour femmes de Paris, au sujet de son éventuelle complicité avait-elle incité Théobald à commettre cet acte cruel ? La justice ne pouvait rien prouver et Henriette a été remise en liberté. Avec l'aide d'un pasteur français, elle put partir en Amérique, où elle fut d'abord enseignante. Ensuite, elle s'est mariée avec un pasteur américain et elle tenait un cours littéraire dans un milieu presbytérien. Cette gouvernante a fait l'objet d'un film en 1940, intitulé L'Étrangère (All This, and Heaven Too), avec Bette Davis et Charles Boyer dans les rôles principaux.
