The present book, curated and introduced by Fazil Jamal, is a selection of recent discourses by Imam Hadhrat Munir Ahmad Azim on the question of 'Jihad'. Speaking against the backdrop of a number of recent international events, including terror attacks involving radicalised youths, Hadhrat Azim critically analyzes the doctrine and practice of 'Jihad' in our times, throwing clear light on this much distorted and misunderstood concept in the world of religion. Through these discourses, Hadhrat Azim reflects on challenges confronting the sanctity and integrity of Islamic values and the larger welfare of humanity in this era as a direct consequence of the distortions that have crept in the doctrinal appreciation of 'Jihad'. He points out that the Qur'anic conception of 'Jihad' is the anti-thesis of the ideology of coercive religiosity being propagated in its name. In Islam, 'Jihad' does not stand for senseless violence; nor is it a weapon of aggression. Yet, today, the spiritual doctrine has been turned upside down by the political extremists and terrorists who seek to justify the indefensible under the garb of religious authority. Today, Jihad' is invoked by the violent extremists not just against 'oppressive' non-Muslim States or governments; but also against civilian non-combatants. Fighting oppression contains good intention, and is a lawful objective. However, committing evil acts in the process cannot be condoned by law. It is instructive to remember killing non-combatants is a capital offence under the Shari'ah. Moreover, the permission to fight in self-defence is to be exercised by the community of believers under a properly-constituted authority such as a Messenger of Allah. In other words, only the supreme authority in Islam- the Prophet or the caliph of Allah as the head of a Muslim State- is entitled to declare 'Jihad' in Islam. Any proclamation of 'Jihad' by anybody else would be pure vigilantism. Hadhrat Khalifatullah agrees that the invocation of 'Jihad' in political and territorial conquests over the centuries has contributed to the shaping of negative perceptions about it among the wider public.As a religious doctrine much distorted by political abuse by many Muslims, and as a much misunderstood concept by non-Muslims, 'Jihad' requires clear elucidation in our times. Hence, these discourses are an important contribution to our understanding of this vital subject. BY correcting the mistakes in the intellectual and spiritual appreciation of 'Jihad', Hadhrat Azim exhorts Muslims to reclaim the soul of Faith in this difficult era by shunning extremism of all types.
