About the Book

During the 1960s when the Hippy movement developed in the States, Israel was in her early teens and was desperately trying to defend herself, send down roots and develop her economy all at the same time. The Israelis tackled this tough reality with Calvinistic determination. There was no time for drugs or experimental life styles or even the Beatles. Nevertheless there are always a few oddballs in every society and some of these unconventional individuals gathered together in the almost abandoned ancient center of Cabala, the Old Jewish Quarter of Sfat. Some of the indigenous clans that could trace there histories in this town back to the 15th century still inhabited this ancient site. These locals, a tough breed of mountain people, were now joined by an influx of hippies, freaks and artists that were drawn to the place by its remoteness, beauty and mystic atmosphere. Here are ten short stories about an unconventional artist and his dealings with a variety of characters living in and visiting the the Old Jewish Quarter. These stories alternatively humorous, serious and philosophical cover a seven year cycle in his life at the end of which he comes to some conclusions and a better understanding of himself, his life and the future.
About the Author: About the author Born London England 1934. He left home and school at an early age and made his first trip to Africa aged 16 falling in love with the continent, its people and their music. At 18 walked and hitchhiked from London to South Africa across the Sahara desert and stayed in Central Africa till immigrating to Israel aged 20. As a member of a young border kibbutz served in the newly formed paratroop unit, parachuting into the Sinai Desert in the 1956 Sinai campaign. After serving in the paratroopers and being severely wounded returned for three years to Central Africa, living mainly in the bush operating heavy earthmoving equipment, working copper mines, building roads, dams and clearing jungle for farmlands. Had always sketched and painted and finally did this full time starting in 1970. Lived from painting, print making and sculpture from then on. After numerous one man shows in Israel, the U.S.A., Mexico and England, received in 2003 recognition for his artwork in the form of a grant from the prestigious Jackson Pollok, Lee Krasner Foundation of New York. Due to a spinal problem he was unable to carry on with his artwork for several years during which time he began to write. He has so far written seven novellas and a number of short stories.
