About the Book

Schon als im August 1539 Ignatius von Loyola und seine ersten Gefahrten Papst Paul III. den Entwurf eines Grundgesetzes der Gesellschaft Jesu vorlegten, hatten sie den amerikanischen Erdteil als mogliches kunftiges Einsatzgebiet im Blick. Zehn Jahre spater, 1549, trafen die ersten Jesuiten in Brasilien ein. Im spanischen Herrschaftsbereich wurde der Orden erst 1565 zur missionarischen Arbeit zugelassen. Noch vor Mexiko wurde 1568 Peru zur altesten Provinz der Gesellschaft Jesu in Hispanoamerika. Mit den Patres Kaspar Ruea, Michael Durst und Ferdinand Reinmann kamen bereits 1617/1618 erste Jesuiten aus dem deutschen Sprachraum in diese Ordensprovinz. Wie in anderen Regionen erfreuten sich sie und ihre Landsleute aufgrund ihrer Leistungen und ihrer hingebungsvollen Berufstatigkeit insbesondere in den Moxos-Missionen, aber auch in den Kollegien der Stadte des Hochlandes oder in Lima besonderen Ansehens. In diesem Band werden die Lebenswege von 28 Priestern und 12 Brudern aus den zentraleuropaischen Ordensprovinzen und von zwei weiteren deutschen Jesuiten vorgestellt. Sie alle haben im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert im Bereich der heutigen Staaten Peru und Bolivien vornehmlich als Seelsorger, aber auch als Lehrer, Wissenschaftler, Kunstler und Verwalter gewirkt gemaa dem Versprechen, "uber die Welt hin unterwegs zu sein ... zu groaerer Ehre Gottes, unseres Herrn, und zu groaerem geistlichen Vorteil der Seelen" (Ignatius, Satzungen uber Sendungen, 1544). Die Autoren Johannes Meier (geboren 1948) lehrt Mittlere und Neuere Kirchengeschichte und Religiose Volkskunde an der Katholisch-Theologischen Fakultat der Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat in Mainz. Er initiierte und leitet das Forschungsprojekt "Jesuiten zentraleuropaischer Provenienz in Portugiesisch- und Spanisch-Amerika (17./18. Jahrhundert)". Uwe Glusenkamp (geboren 1971), Studium der Katholischen Theologie (Dr. theol. 2007) und Mittleren und Neueren Geschichte (M.A. 2004) in Mainz, ist Mitarbeiter am Seminar fur Kirchengeschichte in der Katholisch-Theologischen Fakultat der Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz.
