Dette er en bok om mennesker i England og Malawi. Et ungt engelsk misjonærpar lever i Lilongwe mens de sliter med livene sine. Når Alfie (sønnen) blir utvist fra skolen etter at han tuklet med en ung medelev, måtte han klare seg selv i England der hans foreldre opprinnelig kom fra. Ved hjelp av andre mennesker, får Alfie livet sitt tilbake. Han har gode hjelpere i 98-årige Astra, hennes sønn Thor med sin sønn Aidan, som igjen ble gift med den afrikanske jenta Lublubah. Denne romanen er skrevet som en hyllest til de flotte menneskene forfatteren har møtt gjennom livet. Karakterene i boka eksisterer for det meste i virkelighen. Beskrivelsene fra England er forfatterens egen fantasi, mens besøkene i Malawi og Hellas er beskrevet ut fra egne opplevelser. Bildene på forsiden av boka er tatt av forfatteren i Malawi. Vi ser fra bilrundturen til Dezda, og fra Lake Malawi og fra Lilongwe jernbanestasjon. I tillegg et glimt fra Bishop MacKenzie International School i Lilongwe.
About the Author: Jeg er født i 1941 i Oslo og har arbeidet som elektronikk- ingeniør i hele mitt aktive arbeidsliv. Det meste av tiden var jeg ansatt i HP Norge som internasjonal produktspesialist på store, grafiske skrivere (Designjet). Det har vært mange hobbyer som har fulgt meg gjennom livet. Jazzpiano, amatørradio, film (35 mm, 16mm, og 8mm) og video. Jeg har til og med jobbet som Jazz DJ hos lokale radiostasjoner (Radio Oslofjord og Creative Radio). Historien om Dizzie Gillepie som gapskrattet av meg over min "Bridge in Indiana" er sann. Det hendte virkelig! Nå, som pensjonist, valgte jeg å fortsette med film og video. Hjemme har jeg et laboratorium for overføring av film (8mm) og video (Betamax, HVS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi-8, 8, digital-8) til DVD eller BluRay. For å gjøre noe helt uventet debuterte jeg med denne boka skrevet på engelsk for et par år siden. Takket være en nabo som bodde like ved meg i Hellas, Suzie Tullett, fikk jeg inspirasjon fra henne til å prøve meg som skribent. Gjennom hennes intensivkurs i romanskriving, og videre utdannelse ved London School of Journalism som fjernelev, fikk jeg etter min egen mening kunnskap nok til å kaste meg ut i det. CreateSpace i USA (Amazon), trykket denne boka først, i den engelske versjonen, de har også trykket denne norske versjonen Mange av familiemedlemmene mine har vært modeller for karakterene, og har også foreslått den endelige touch i det originale manuskriptet, sammen med gode venner Ettersom jeg er en klok mann (i egne øyne), pensjonert fra jobben som ingeniør i elektronikk, tenkte jeg på å gjøre noe uventet og nytt. Som for eksempel det jeg fant på, - å skrive en debutroman på engelsk. Den norske versjonen du holder i vil naturligvis benytte alle stedsnavn og personer fra den originale utgaven samt karakterer som jeg har funnet på. Men boken er litt skrevet om likevel. Beskrivelsene fra Malawi og Hellas er ganske nøyaktige og selvopplevde. Takk, mor Astrid for dine lørdagsvafler i så mange år. Jeg håper at jeg vil likne på deg når jeg fyller 99 år, slik du gjorde i januar 2015. Du er utholdende som en løvinne, og min fastlege tror at jeg har arvet mange av hennes gener. Takk skal du ha for arven du gav meg!
