Rousseau ist einer der meistkommentierten Autoren des 18. Jahrhunderts. Eine große Anzahl bedeutender Schriften hat er vorzuweisen. Wie viele seiner intellektuellen Zeitgenossen hatte er viele Interessen wie u.a. Politik, Philosophie, Botanik, Musik und Pädagogik. In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, inwieweit Jean-Jacques Rousseau ein Vertreter der Aufklärung war oder als ein Kritiker der Epoche gelten kann. Wo finden sich in seinen Konzepten aufklärerische Ideen? Wo weicht er von der geltenden Meinung ab? Als Grundlage für die Beantwortung der Fragen dient das pädagogische Hauptwerk Rousseaus: "Émile oder über die Erziehung"3. "Rousseau ist kein Aufklärer, sondern ein Gegner der Aufklärung"4, das ist eine Position, die vertreten wird. Der Philosoph Karl Vorländer weist auf die Abstammung Rousseaus aus dem Volk und seine Herkunft aus dem demokratisch-protestantischen Genf hin. Die Grundzüge seiner Theorien seien nicht von der Vernunft geleitet, sondern bestünden aus einem "überschwänglichen Gefühl". Knapp hundert Jahre später ist auch Werner Schneiders der Ansicht, dass Rousseau "als Kritiker der politischen und kulturellen Zustände in Frankreich zum Kritiker des Absolutismus und der Aufklärung überhaupt"5 wurde. Daneben existiert eine andere Sichtweise, die Rousseau in einem anderen Licht erscheinen lässt. Heinz-Otto Sieburg ist der Meinung, dass sich "in Rousseau die französische Aufklärungsbewegung vollendet und zugleich überwunden hat"6. Ruhloff spricht von Rousseau als "Vollender"7 der Aufklärung.
