Die einerseits logisch nachvollziehbare Argumentation, andererseits aber innere Widersprüchlichkeit des Werkes, lassen sehr unterschiedliche und gegensätzliche Interpretationen zu: So wird Rousseau von manchen Seiten als Vordenker des modernen Totalitarismus betrachtet, dessen Überlegungen die totalitären Diktaturen des 20. Jahrhunderts zumindest mit ermöglicht haben. Andere sehen in ihm dagegen den Vorläufer des heutigen Liberalismus. In der vorliegenden Arbeit stehen die totalitären Elemente in Rousseaus Staatslehre im Mittelpunkt. Es soll analysiert werden, inwieweit sich eine totalitäre Deutung begründen lässt. Sind Rousseaus Ausführungen im 'Contrat social' wirklich dazu geeignet, einem totalitären Herrschaftssystem den Weg zu ebnen? Ist mit seiner Konzeption des 'volonté générale' zwangsläufig die Aufgabe jeglicher individueller Freiheit verbunden? Kann in der Gestalt des Gesetzgebers tatsächlich eine Art 'Erziehungsdiktator' gesehen werden? Zielt die rousseausche Staatslehre damit letztlich sogar auf die Rechtfertigung des totalitären Staates ab? Im ersten Schritt wird das Wesen des Totalitarismus bestimmt. Dazu werden zwei Theorien totalitärer Herrschaft vorgestellt: Zum einen gilt es den herrschaftsstrukturelle Ansatz nach Carl J. Friedrich und Zbigniew K.
