En conjunto, todos los poemas de Jardín de filos recrean los temas del dolor humano y la angustia del vivir en un mundo opresivo, bajo una visión pesimista. En cada uno de estos textos, el poeta mira y se contempla a sí mismo en la realidad fisica y social y refleja su amargura, escepticismo e hipersensibilidad como una especie de poeta maldito. Esencialmente, el símbolo de los filos emerge como una constante metáfora y una hipérbole, para explicar ese sufrimiento emocional que afecta al hablante lírico central. En contraste, los elementos vegetales y florales se asocian más a la belleza misma.

De esta manera, el hablante poético de este libro reflexiona brevemente y se queja sobre la vida misma en general. Asimismo, aborda diversos aspectos, tales como el amor, la muerte, la soledad, Dios, el poeta, la poesía, la naturaleza, la mexicanidad, la guerra, el dinero, el sol, la luna, el agua, las nubes y la enfermedad.

En especial, los tres primeros poemas y el poema final son de más reciente factura artística y fueron creados a principios del siglo XXI. Así pues, "Palabras para amansar fieras y filos", "Flor de filos", "Jardín de filos" y "Los frutos del desierto", convergen hacia los mismos temas expuestos en el título de la presente introducción. De esta manera, el dolor y la angustia se concentran en el papel de los diferentes "filos" de la realidad objetiva y de la subjetividad del poeta. Los "filos" son, pues, la hipérbole del dolor. Entonces, el dolor oscila entre la angustia profunda, negativa y oscura, y la ironía y el humor, hasta llegar a la catarsis final y el alivio del dolor. En tanto, metáforas e imágenes poéticas convergen para comunicar una fina y punzante visión estética sobre una experiencia emocional de suyo pesimista. Finalmente, la forma poética en sí se basa en los poemas breves y versos muy cortos, estilizados y alargados para dar la apariencia de armas blancas, espinas y filamentos de flores.

Asimismo, el presente poemario recrea, reescribe y reordena la sección "Hierba Mala" del cuaderno de poemas Sangre de Circe (1989) del presente autor. Es una forma de reciclar viejos textos que también se centran y concentran en los temas del dolor y la angustia, puliendo y refinando la forma poética. En este sentido, el autor de dicho poemario imita la ardua tarea de constante corrección de textos asumida por el brillante poeta mexicano José Emilio Pacheco a lo largo de la vida, quien se convirtió así en un orfebre de sus propios poemas. Además, se agregan a dicha parte algunos poemas nuevos bajo la misma unidad temática.

Estos poemas de "Hierba Mala" fueron escritos bajo el impacto del subdesarrollo mexicano de las décadas de los setenta y los ochenta, cuando el presente autor habitó en la provinciana ciudad de Chihuahua. En realidad, aquéllos eran tiempos luminosos de familia, amistad, escuela y nacionalismo. Sin embargo, las oportunidades laborales y profesionales escaseaban, los salarios eran bajos, las prestaciones sociales no cubrían todas las necesidades de los ciudadanos y se repetían las constantes crisis económicas bajo el Estado autoritario, centralista y corrupto. Por ello, estos poemas pueden verse como negativos, escépticos y pesimistas, porque fueron escritos bajo un impulso puramente emocional y de búsqueda de imágenes poéticas nuevas.
